about

Much like Carleton, the first proper Counting on Downstairs album, Weighters was compiled and collaged from an array of fragments that filled various desktop folders over the past five years. These stray loops and soundscapes spent a few months at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024 getting acquainted with each other, some easily, others with a good amount of coaxing. The tracks that emerged are quieter and more elusive than previous work. Tones and half-melodies are often embedded in the ambient noise and open world sounds that dominate. A post-twilight pre-dawn mood revealed itself and became the aesthetic to follow.

Best listened to in headphones, ready to lean in a little, to find things in the dark, or have them find you, perhaps.

released March 15, 2024

"Everything Happened to You" uses a sample from the Bill Evans Trio track "Detour Ahead" on Waltz for Debbie (Riverside Records). It also features a recorded reading by Don McKay of his poem “What Kind of Fool Am I?”, originally published in his collection Apparatus, from 1997 (McClelland & Stewart)

"Some Time" uses a sample from Johann Johannsson's "It Will Take Some Time" on the Copenhagen Dreams OST (12 Tónar)

"The Way Back" features segments of an environmental recording made by Mireille Eagan in St. John's, NF more than a decade ago.

"Repose" features samples from one of the early iterations of the FM3 Buddha Machines.
